What is SIBO?
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when bacteria that normally live in the large intestine migrate into and overgrow in the small intestine. This can interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption, leading to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, excessive wind, and nausea.
SIBO is more common than previously recognised and is often an underlying cause of symptoms in people who have been diagnosed with IBS.
It can be identified through a hydrogen and methane breath test, which measures the gases produced by bacteria in the small intestine after consuming a sugar solution.
The GutSense Clinic Approach
If you feel you may have SIBO, you can buy one of SIBO tests kits which will be sent directly to you for easy home testing. (see Test page for more info)
If you have been diagnosed with SIBO, working with a specialist, we will focus on:
- In-depth initial assessment to help us address all symptoms, medications, lifestyle factors
- Identify risk factors contributing to development of SIBO
- Provide you with dietary management plan to improve gut health
- Advise on how to reduce risk of SIBO returning
- Advise on medical management treatment for SIBO.
- Provide you with all the information you need to manage SIBO, improve your symptoms and longer term gut health
Dietary management is a key part of SIBO treatment. A specialist dietitian can guide you through the appropriate dietary approach alongside any medical treatment, help you manage symptoms during and after treatment, and support you in reducing the risk of recurrence. This may include a low fermentation diet, the Bi-Phasic diet, or a modified low FODMAP approach depending on your individual circumstances.
